Secretary of State Backs Off Voting Ban for 45,000 Felons

Saying he was “compelled by conscience,” Secretary of State Alex Padilla on Tuesday dropped his predecessor’s efforts to prevent some 45,000 state felons from voting.

“It is not lost on me that persons of color are disproportionately represented in our correctional institutions and that undeniable disparities exist,” Padilla said.
